In The Inner Winter, Indigenous healer Asha Frost offers a compassionate guide for anyone navigating burnout, chronic illness, grief, life transitions, or simply the need to slow down.
What if winter – the season, the feeling, the ache – wasn’t something to push through, but something sacred to tend? The Inner Winter is a heart-centered guide to honouring rest, darkness, and the sacred rhythms of the seasons, drawing on the Medicine Wheel and Asha’s own lived experience with Lupus.
Indigenous people have always understood that there is medicine in every season. The natural world teaches us that life moves in cycles—growth, blooming, harvest, release, rest, and renewal. Winter is not a mistake in the cycle. It is a sacred time of turning inward, listening deeply, and allowing what is no longer needed to fall away.
And yet, we have been taught to resist our own winters. We are encouraged to push through, to keep going, to stay productive, to hide our pain, and to rush toward the next season. In doing so, we can lose touch with the wisdom that lives within the very experiences we are trying so hard to escape.
The Inner Winter invites you to see your difficult seasons differently.
Rather than viewing winter as a place where you are lost, broken, or stuck, this book offers another way of understanding it – as a sacred threshold. A place where transformation is happening beneath the surface. A place where the old is being released, where deep listening becomes possible, and where the seeds of what comes next are quietly taking root.
Each of the four parts of the book embodies a season: Spring as rebirth, Summer as growth, Fall as harvest, and Winter as rest. Every chapter opens with an ancestral Ojibwe legend, flows into embodied teachings, and closes with a healing ritual, ceremony or journal practice. With gentleness and grounded spiritual authority, Asha invites readers to come home to themselves – not be transcending or romanticizing their pain, but by honoring it as medicine.
